There has been some communication between family members regarding Inocencia Balunsat.
I have listed some emails from different family members below:

Hi Harold,

so far our research has  found an Innocencia Balunsat.
She was married twice, but haven’t found any record of her marrying a Lumicao, but she could have been your ancestor.

Gregorio Balunsat b. , Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines
+Ines Duiahum , m. Bef 1816, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines

had a daughter named:

Inocencia Balunsat b. 22 Jun 1828, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines

+Hermenegildo Daquinag b. , Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, d. Bef 1859, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, m. Bef 1848, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines

+Agustin Calahi b. , Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, m. 4 Feb 1859, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines

Gregorio was the son of our common ancestor, francicso Balunsat, Alcalde of Bayombong from 1772.

We also have a few records of a Pontenciana Daughter of Torcuato Balunsat, (son of Gregorio) married to Enrique Liban on Janaury 31, 1856 in Bayombog, and

Potenciana Balunsat b. 14 Aug 1837, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, daughter of Gregorio Balunsat.

We become related thru Francisco Balunsat who had at least two sons, Gregorio and Andre. Andre is the father of Mauricio, our great great grandfather.

Let me know what you think of this,

cousin Craig

Hello Craig,

Please forgive me for being so inexcusably late in replying to your email.

I received a letter written on 9/30/1981 from cousin Jean Lumicao Bulan (Solano), the daughter of Maxima Belet Lumicao and Francisco Piggangay Bulan. Jean was a RN.  She died some years later from Lupus.
Jean mailed me a handwritten copy of the family trees of several families from the secretary of Father Joseph Van Daelen of the Roman Catholic Church.  The record lists the family of Antonio Balunsat Lumicao (d. 11/18/1937) married to Mariana Dumelod Belet (d.10/10/1958).  Antonio's parents were Clemente Lumicao and Inocencia Balunsat.  Also in 1981 Antonio's daughter Maria Inocencia Belet Lumicao (my aunt Meling) wrote me her handwritten genealogy, and she listed  Clemente's wife as Inocencia Balunsat.  Also Clemente's father Don Diego Lumicao's wife was Angela Balunsat.  In the book, Journal of Northern Luzon Vol.II  No. 2, it mentions Diego Lumicao (former Gobernadorcillo) and his Igorot wife Taguiling traveled with two Ilocanos to Ilocos Norte to persuade Ilocanos to migrate to Lumabang in 1852

I wonder if the surname of Ines Duiahum might be misspelled.   I know that Raymundo Dinahum was a Gobernadorcillo in 1797,1802, 1821.  Domingo Dinahum was Gobernadorcillo in 183, 1837, 1845.

Harold

Cousin Haroe.ld,
Thanks very much for notations of possible misspellings of Gaddang surnames. I believe the genealogists , as also most foreigners, particularly, the Spanish, had a hard time pronouncing and spelling the Gaddang names producing variations. I believe the priests themselves could have possibly written down their best spelling of the Gaddang names, and the Americans did the same.ergoing
We have to allow for such errors, and correct them as soon as found.
This however should not stop us from undergoing continuous research and documentations. I know that even the name Gaddang was misspelled so many times, such as Gaddanes, Gadang, Gaddan, etc.

If we stop our efforts to bicker over it, we would never get our work done, and led to further discoveries. Ys I agree that records must be challenged and compared with accounts of relatives, and friends, and individuals at the time. How else would we trace illegitimate descendants.
Also, the Gaddangs have a habit of reusing dead children's names to rename newborn ones, resulting in proliferation of individuals with the same names.
I think the habit of naming grandchildren for their grandparents is a useful tool in analyzing relationships to descendants.
Alexis

Cuzi Geno,
Clemente I Balunsat Lumicao could not have been born in 1868, because his oldest son Pedro Balunsat Lumicao is estimated to be born around 1868. Why? Because Pedro's wife Macaria Dumelod Velasco, was born on January 2, 1867 and died June 24, 1971.
Pedro Balunsat Lumicao and Macaria Dumelod Velasco also had another son named Clemente II Velasco Lumicao,
the oldest brother of  Maria Paz (b. 6/20/05) and Anastasia .
Inocencia was widowed from her first husband, Daquinag, in 1859 when she was 31, and must have been married 8 years to her second, before she married Clemente Balunsat Lumicao,  who was younger than her, and related.
Since there was no record of marriage. My guess is that they could not get permission from the priest who may have had the impression that they were closely related.
This is going to be a lively discussion
Cousin Alexis

In accordance with Gaddang tradition, Inocencia D. Balunsat did have one Grandchild named after her: Maria Inocencia Belet Lumicao, b. 2/28/1907 in Solano, daughter of Antonio Balunsat Lumicao and Mariana Dumelod Belet.
Craig: I did get your Gedcom family tree, except mine have pictures in them, and also you left some data out from your Granddad, Herbert Joyce White's record.
I guess the stores are making sure we have an early Christmas this year.
So, enjoy it folks.

HI dad,
I am in the process of investigating the records. It’s possible that our researcher, Ms Sanchez missed some of the marriage records.
I'll see if can find the marriage record for Innocencia and Lumicao
Craig

Hi Alex,

You are correct. I misread the date of Clemente's birthdate and read Pedro's son as his birthdate. I estimate Clemente's birthdate  around  1833-48 (assuming he was between 20-35 when he was married). Interesting premise you propose. So your premise is feasible.

The Gaddangs were notorious for intermarrying like the Royals of England. Unless we can find records of a marriage of Clemente Lumicao or see the birth record of Pedro Balunat Lumicao to see if it lists who his legitmate parents are, we are only able to go by family oral traditions. Sometimes, the families do have a scandal or two that they try to hide. LOL. I have 4 stories from different sources why my dad changed his name from Andres Velasco Lumicao to Andres Lumicao Velasco. My father said he changed it as a promise to his grandmother Macaria Dumelod Velasco to preserve the Velasco family name because there were many Lumicaos and few Velascos. My mother says it was because my mother was also a Lumicao in background and it was easier to get married if my dad changed his name to Velasco. Another relative says it was because the Army could not spell Lumicao when he enlisted and used his middle name Velasco instead. Another relative said the true story is because when he wanted to come to the USA the Lumicaos wouldn't help him and in anger changed his name to Velasco. Perhaps, one of these stories is true of perhaps they are all true.

Genealogy is an interesting study, but sometimes, a geneaogist will discover a historical fact that other members of the family would prefer to be left hidden. However, it's these stories and these inconsistencies which makes history fascinating and brings our ancestors to life rather than leaving them as individuals with just a birthdate and a date of death.

I was reserching slavery in the Philippines, and the U.S. government listed Felipe Lumicao, Pdero Piggangay, and Tomas Pigganay Cabanag as engaging in slavery (as defined by the U.S. Government at the time). Tomas Piggangay Cabanag was actually convicted of slavery, but his conviction was later overturned on appeal. Fascinating stories, but I don't know if people want these stories included in their geneaology. As a historian, one would have to, at least footnote, the stories for posterity or ask permission before they are made public if they are not already made public through other sources.

Well, I am rambling. BTW where did you get the vintage photos that you (i.e. Anastasia) and do you have more you could upload to either the Gaddang or Cauahian Na Gaddang group on facebook.

If you are right about Inocencia and Clemente, then Inocencia's mother Angela Balunsat would also have to be the sister of Andres Balunsat and Gregorio Balunsat. Interesting, we may be close to tying up another lose end on the Balunsat side. We still have to connect our Danguilan and Balassu connection.

Cuz,

Geno

We suppose that Balunsat is a  misspelling of the Surname Balansat , also spelled Balanzat.
